BOARD OF DIRECTORS: State Delegate
GRETCHEN GONZALEZ, State Delegate, joined the Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) in 2012. As a Staff Attorney, Ms. Gonzalez provides free civil legal services to families and individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. Her cases have involved family law proceedings, matrimonial cases, SSI/SSD appeals, debtor/creditor cases, and end of life planning. In addition, she provides in house training for local service providers on HIV Confidentiality Law and HIPAA as it relates to HIV/AIDS.
Prior to joining VLP, Ms. Gonzalez worked in New York City as a trial attorney in the housing unit of both Queens Legal Services and the Legal Aid Society’s Harlem Community Law Office. She was a member of the New York City Family Eviction Prevention Subsidy team and represented individual clients in all aspects of nonpayment and holdover cases as well as Section 8 and Public Housing terminations and appeals.
In 2011, Ms. Gonzalez was appointed by Chief Administrative Judge Pfau to the New York City Advisory Council on Housing Court where she served as the tenant representative in the appointment of housing court judges.
Ms. Gonzalez has also worked as a Staff Attorney with the Urban Justice Center Mental Health Project where she represented clients with severe and persistent mental illness in Medicaid and Social Security hearings. She has clerked with the ACLU National LGBT Rights Project and Children’s Legal Services.
Ms. Gonzalez holds an MA in Psychology, cum laude, from City University of New York Hunter College, and a Bachelors of Arts and Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Boston University.
Ms. Gonzalez is happy to be living in her hometown of Amherst NY with her husband. She is a member of the Junior League of Buffalo, An Ambassador for Planned Parenthood of Western New York and sits on the Continuum of Care Project Review Committee for the Homeless Alliance of Western New York.
